Interstellar

With our time on Earth coming to an end, a team of explorers undertakes the most important mission in human history: traveling beyond this galaxy to discover whether mankind has a future among the stars. (blurb from Interstellar Official Movie Site)

First of all, if you haven't watched this film yet, stop scrolling. Do not wait for the torrent to come out. Watch it in an IMAX theater, right now. Then watch it ten more times, because it might take you a few times to understand how everything happens and because this film is awesome. It's in a world of its own. It was unbelievable, yet it followed its own logic. As far as I know, it made sense. As Kevin so nicely puts it, "This was science fiction at its most science fiction. It held true to scientific principles until science could no longer explain it. Then [Nolan] filled in the gaps with fantasy."

I was a little worried about sitting through a three-hour film, but when it ended I just wanted it to keep going and see Cooper get Brand. I've been reliving it by scrolling through Tumblr looking for GIFs. I keep thinking of alternate endings. What if Cooper listened to Murph and stayed? What if Cooper chose Edmund's planet instead? This film made me feel all the feels. I was perched on the edge of my seat and my heart was racing. I cried on Murph's birthday. Every time I think of Mann I want to smack something, but have to settle for throwing my hands up in exasperation.

*massive spoiler alert* When Brand went on her spiel about how love transcends boundaries, I was a little annoyed at first and thought, "Oh so that's why you have a woman on this mission: to be the emotional and soppy one," but after Mann's evilness was confirmed, I thought, "Damn, should have listened to Brand and gone to Edmund's planet," but then they would have found him dead, the planet uninhabitable, and gone back to earth empty-handed, without giving Cooper a chance to try to communicate to Murph through the fifth-dimension, which means she wouldn't have been able to save the world. So it all worked out. Everything is perfect. This film is perfect. The fifth-dimension tripped me up, but this film is still perfect. *end spoiler*

I left the theater inspired to visit a space museum, have a stargazing night, and take a planetary astronomy and/or astrophysics course. But at the same time I also don't know what to do with the rest of my life anymore. Not that I ever did. Oh well, another movie run to Interstellar I guess.

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

-Dylan Thomas
